Smaug by PaintedKelpie Smaug by PaintedKelpie
So this is the best I could do today. I wanted to get him painted up the best I could before the movie! I'm going to go over him again, particularly with antiquing. He looks a little better in real life. The camera ate up a lot of the shades....He's a little more red than shown here.

How do you make the scales so precise? Anytime I etch them into the clay I get a bunch of little clay flakes that get in the way.

Umm you have to take off those flakes.

Looking fantastic, so much detail! Please take photos at different angles when he's finished. Are you going to paint his belly like it has jewels and gold on it?

no, not Smaug, I will complain to all Smaug "artists" he is lion faced, furry cheeks and fur down his spin, missing a scale on his chest, VERY red, cat eared and has an under bite.

Why can't artists interpret him as something other that a lion-faced dragon? Tolkien's original painting made him look more like a dog. www.museumsyndicate.com/images…

Meh. I much prefer Tolkien's watercolor, and the book itself to draw his description, than that of the cartoon.  "You're Welcome"

OMG! How in the world do you not go crazy from doing all that scalework with supersculpey??? Its like trying to sculpt in butter!!

Seriously though you should make a mold of this (or pay someone to mold it for you) and sell castings of these because this is gorgeous!!!!

I'm starting to wonder if I should try another medium myself. LOL. But I am used to it by now. I would like to try a lost wax bronze casting some day, but my funds are low.....and this is why ancient artists had patrons....:D

Thanks! He's almost done! I'm kinda cringing at this pic but it's motivation to finish! His teeth, thank you, someone or something banged into his head and his face fell off....I managed to save him but it's a little different than before..

He reminds me a lot of Draco from Dragonheart, but just like you could feel Sean Connery in Draco's design, I can feel Benedict in this dragon's.

Your dragon sculptures are just incredible. You make them look real and believable; its so stunning. I love the crocodilian look of the scales on the tail of this one.

I just have to say I LOVE the fingertips of his wings! The curl of the extra digits is just priceless, and so many artists run from that detail!
